Netherlands: Calls for 50% increase in alcohol tax

16 March 2012

Dutch institute for alcohol policy STAP, Dutch mental health organisation GGZ Nederland, Dutch organisation for addiction problems Jellinek and Dutch institute for mental health Trimbos have proposed that the Dutch government increases the surcharge on alcohol in the Netherlands by 50% in order to tackle alcohol abuse.
The organisations think this will lead to a 5% drop in alcohol consumption and it will generate some EUR 350mn annually for the Treasury. There are also calls for alcohol tax to be adjusted according to the inflation rate.
