Netherlands Health Council removes professor with ties to the alcohol industry from advisory committee

20 April 2026

Professor Joline Beulens, an internationally renowned lifestyle researcher working at the Amsterdam UMC, is no longer a member of the Dutch Health Council's Alcohol Advisory Committee, after an investigation by The Investigative Desk and Follow the Money revealed that she was not transparent about her ties to the alcohol industry.

The Dutch Health Council is currently preparing new guidelines for alcohol consumption in The Netherlands. The Council removed Beulens for failing to disclose her collaboration with Kenneth J. Mukamal, a Harvard professor, who promised the alcohol industry favorable scientific results.

Beulens and the Harvard professor worked on MACH15, a large-scale study that came under scrutiny due to influence from the alcohol industry. The study was partly funded by major alcohol producers such as Heineken, AB InBev, and Diageo.

Professor Beulens was paid by the alcohol industry for publications in which she concluded that moderate drinking is beneficial for the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Beulens acknowledges that she has not always been transparent in the past regarding funding she received from the alcohol industry.
