Dutch people consumed in 2024 less alcohol

6 May 2025

The average alcohol consumption in the Netherlands has fallen further in the past year. This is evident from an analysis by the Dutch Institute for Alcohol Policy STAP of figures from the Dutch Brewers, the Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin and Statistics Netherlands.

Last year, 6.19 liters of pure alcohol were consumed per capita. This concerns the total registered sales, divided by all Dutch people, which also includes all non-drinkers, babys and children. If you look only at the average alcohol consumption of all people aged 15 and over, then the total per capita alcohol consumption in 2024 was 7.29 liters.

This means that in 2024, 11,2% less pure alcohol was consumed per average Dutch person than in 2014, when this was 6.97 liters. Looking only for 15+-people, the decline is 13%. The decreased consumption last decade concerns alcoholic beer and wine, not spirits.

The graph below shows the development of alcohol consumption per capita 0+ and per capita 15+, since 1960 in litres of pure alcohol.
