Criminal death former health minister Els Borst-Eilers

13 February 2014

Dutch police investigating the death of former health minister Els Borst-Eilers say she was likely the victim of a crime. Borst-Eilers’ body was found in her garage on Monday evening.
Borst-Eilers, a trained doctor, served as the Dutch health minister from 1994-2002. She was responsible for an amendment of the Alcohol Licensing and Catering Law in 2000. That amendment restricted the number of alcohol selling points, introduced age verification and gives the health minister the competence to regulate alcohol advertising in an order in council.

Borst-Eilers also restricted smoking in public places, introduced heroin maintenance for addicts and was the architect of a law that gave people suffering from terminal illness the right to end their lives in consultation with a physician.
