Mayor of Katwijk will not enforce new alcohol age limit

25 November 2013

In the Netherlands the legal alcohol age is going up to 18 from next January. The Mayor of Katwijk, Jos Wienen, however said last weekend in an interview in the daily newspaper Trouw that he tends to tolerate the on premise sale of mildly alcoholic beverages (< ABV 15%) to young people born in 1996 and 1997.

Secretary of State Martin van Rijn and several MP's strongly oppose his plans.
