Purchasing ban alcohol and tobacco for under-18s from next year: minister

1 March 2013

Bans on the sale of alcohol and of tobacco products to the under-18s should be introduced together from the beginning of next year, junior health minister Martin van Rijn has told parliament. By taking both steps at the same time, the message will be clearer and officials can launch a joint information campaign targeting local councils, bars and cafes and sports clubs, the minister said.

In July 2012 four MPs proposed in a members' bill the introduction of one age limit of 18 years for on and for off premise purchasing and for public possession of both mildly and strong alcoholic beverages. These MPs want to bring in the new alcohol age this summer.
