Alcohol purchasing age will go up to 18

29 October 2012

The two largest parties in the Netherlands, the Liberals and Labour, agreed to form a coalition. After Dutch elections on September 12, the Liberals (VVD, 41 seats) and Labour (PvdA, 38 seats) emerged as the biggest parties. One of the most notable measures in the coalition agreement is a raise of the legal alcohol purchasing age to 18 (see below pdf with paragraph Security and Justice).

Both parties also agreed on higher taxes on alcohol in 2014 (+6% spirits, +14% other alcoholic drinks).
The most likely dates for the new government to be presented to Queen Beatrix is November 8 or 9.
